Native American Flutes

There is an enduring beauty to the organic flow of wood grain.  Native American flutes are very satisfying to make, and require only the most basic of tools.  Most Native American flutes are made in two pieces glued together.  I prefer to make my Native American flutes from a solid piece of wood.  This limits how long Native American flutes can be, but the result is a Native American flute with tone that will not be lost if the glue in the joint fails.  If you are interested in how they are made, send me an email and I can explain how I make Native American flutes by boring a hole end to end through 16 inches of cedar.

My first Native American flute.  I did not expect it to play after cutting it too short.  But I decided to finish it anyway to practice carving.  The result was a Native American flute that surprised me with great tone.

The earliest Native American flutes had hide wrapped around them to form the channel for the sound hole.  I used cork.  I like the simplicity of this style of Native American flute.  I have made a couple of these Native American flutes for gifts.
